One idea can inspire a million more.

At the Versal Foundation, we believe that knowledge is the catalyst to transform the world. Do you have expertise in a subject with the power to improve people’s lives? Do you have a passion for new technology?

The Versal Foundation offers grants for people to create amazingly interactive, forever-free courses and share them with the world.

How it works

The Versal Foundation offers grants in two categories: Transformative education and Foundational education (see below for category details). Fill out the application and our selection committee will review it in 2-4 weeks. Grants range from $1000 to $25,000, depending on the scope of your course, length (one hour at a minimum), what it will take to build it, and its power to help people.

Once approved, create your course at Versal.com. You’ll be able to invite people and share it, and we’ll help promote it.

In return for the grant, you’ll agree to make the course free forever, and issue it under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported license.

Transformative education

Designed for courses that will have a profound potential for improving people’s lives. We think of it as “courses for the betterment of humankind”. Sounds big, right? That’s the goal. Know how to teach villagers how to build a clean water system in impoverished desert regions with locally available materials? That’s the kind of idea we’re seeking.

Individuals, non-profit organizations and NGOs with domain expertise are encouraged to apply.

Foundational education

Designed for courses that will cover basic literacy, arithmetic, science, and related topics. In a nutshell, core knowledge that should be readily available by every single person on the planet.

Applicants for this category should highlight any unique qualifications, including experience teaching students without any prior formal education, or students with learning disabilities (for example).

The selection process

Once we have received your application, our team will review it to make sure it’s complete, and send you any feedback before submitting it to our selection committee.

Once your application is confirmed to be in review by our selection committee, expect to hear back within 2-3 weeks.

Selection considerations
Our committee will consider a variety of factors when reviewing your application, including the following:

  1. Does the proposed course fit within the selected category?
  2. How is the applicant uniquely qualified to teach the proposed course?
  3. Who will benefit from learning your material?
  4. How long will it take you to finish creating the course?
  5. How long will it take a student to complete a course?
  6. What size grant are you requesting, and does it reflect the value of your time to create the course and its value to the audience?
